WHY A PODSD OF FATHEBS IS VBEV1EB THAS A POTTSD OF LEAD. Youth's Companion. Which is the heavier, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead? This was a favorite question with "rcbool committee men" of the older time, and the first rash auswer used almost alwaye to be, "a pound of lead!"7 Then from the o!dt-r pupiis would , come the reply, "both alike.r If this question were asked to -day, our old time querist might receive i deci led ( surprise, ror tue pouna or i -arn-era could easily be proved to be i!e Heavier. A feimpie experiment is all the evidence needed. With nny accurate st-dc wci;b out s pound ot lead, using ordinary shot for convenience. Pour th bot. ; into one of the pans of a bhlnce. For iho featherH a light mns'in bag wid be neer'ed, and care must be taken that feathers and bag to gether do not weigh more tbio pound. When the I ag of feathers is put into the other pan of the ba lance the beam will, af'er a few os cillations, come to rst exactly 1-rel. So far the verdict, "both aiikf," seems to be pioved But place the balance upon the rec:vr f n air pump, with had and fatheis undis turbed. Cjver the whole with the glass bell jar and exhaust the air. Slowly Ihe feathers sink and the lead "kicks the beam.' The pound of feathers is heavier than the pound of lead ! The truth is that what we called a 'pound" was not such in fact. For the atmosphere buoys up everything within it in proportion to the bulk of the object, and the feathers, being of greater bulk than the lead, are sup ported by the air to a conbiderably greater extent than the lead. Re moved from this supporting medium, their true weight is made evident. Charles Reade propounds a similar question. In one of his novels a Jew ish trader is made o ask : "Which is the heavier, a pound of feathers or a pound of gold ?" After awhile he explains to the satisfaction of bis audience of mines, tbut the feathers are the heavier. Gold, he says, is weighed by Troy weight, while feathers are weighed by avoirdupois ; and as the twelve ontces in a pound Troy contains but o7G0 grains, while the avoirdupois pound contains 7,000, grains, the pound of feathers is, of course, 1240 grains heavier than the pound of jold. LANGUAGE OF UMBRELLAS. Cricket. There is a language of umbrellas a of fljwers. For instance, place your umbrel'a in a rack and it will indicate tint it will change owners. To open it quickly in Ihe stre--t tueans that somebody's eye is gob g to he put out ; to shut it ; (hut a hnt or two is going to be knocked off. An umbrella carried oer a woman, the roan getting nothing but the drippings of the rain, indicates court ship. When the man ha9 the um brella and the woman the drippirg it indicates marriage To punch your umbrella and then open it means "I dislike 30U." To swing your umbrella over your head signifies " am making a nuis ance of myself." To trail your um brella aloDg the footpath means that the man behind you is thirstirg for your blood. To cairy it at right angles under your arm signifies that an eve is to be lost by the man who follows you. To open an umbrella quickly, it is said, will frighten a mad bull. To put a cotton umbrella by the side of a si ik one signifies "exchange is no robbery " To purchase a' umbrella means "I am not smart, but honest." To lend an umbrella indicates "1 am a fool." To return an umbrella means well, never mii.d what ii means, nobody does it. To carry an umbrella jnst high enough to tear out men's eyes and knock on men's hats signifies "I am a woman." To press ap umbrella on your friend, saying. "OJ do take it ; I had much rather you would thaD not !" signifies lying. To give a friend half of your umbrella mean that both of you will get wet. To carry it- from home in tne morning means ' It will clear off." If dull, spiritless and stupid; if your blood is thick and sluggish; if your ap petite is capricious and uncertain, vom need a Sarsaparilla. For best results ake De V ltt s. J. A Smith druggist.
